Recognizing and Recovering from Burnout: A Guide for Women

Burnout can be an overwhelming experience, leaving you feeling exhausted and stretched thin. It's that state where you're emotionally, physically, and mentally drained, often from dealing with too much stress for too long. In this post, we'll talk about how to spot the signs of burnout and share some practical tips for getting back on track. Understanding these signs can help you manage stress and take better care of yourself.

Women and Burnout: A Common Struggle

Many women face burnout more often than men, and it’s not surprising why. According to a 2021 survey, 42% of women reported feeling burned out, compared to 35% of men. This often happens because women juggle multiple roles—managing a career and taking care of the home and family. It’s like constantly running on a treadmill, trying to keep up with everything, and then you have to plan dinner. It’s exhausting– mentally and physically. You constantly feel like you are falling more and more behind in everything.

Spotting the Signs of Burnout

Recognizing burnout is the first step toward recovery. Take my client, for example—for the sake of HIPAA we will call her Sally. She is a full-time working single mom of two young kids, and they just adopted a puppy. She feels tired all the time, struggles with sleep, ironically she’s exhausted

all day but when she finally gets into her bed her mind his wandering and she cant sleep. Sally finds it hard to focus at her job as a nurse. She is constantly losing her phone. Things that used to make her happy now seem like too much effort so why even bother? These are clear signs of burnout. It's not just about having a bad day; it's about a prolonged state of being overwhelmed.
